Spring in the Fog Crest Vineyard 2012 – Update
May 9th, 2012
We’ve officially reached the next major milestone of the wine-growing season — bud break in the vineyard! Bud break typically happens sometime in March, but this year it was late, arriving mid-April. This is the period of highest danger from frost. Bud break can give the winegrower a general sense of the vigor of the vines, but a better indicator of the potential of the fruit is when the shoots are mature enough to identify flower clusters. This is an exciting time in the vineyard – what will happen the rest of the year? Check out our new video with owner James Manoogian as he talks about the vineyard’s terroir, bud break and the challenges faced when producing award-winning wines in California’s Russian River Valley.

Spring in the Fog Crest Vineyard
March 29th, 2012
Each season brings big changes to the vineyard and with that, anticipation and excitement. Experiencing these changes with the vineyard is a huge part of what we love about making wine. And as you’ve heard before, wine starts in the vineyard. As the cold of winter fades away the murmur of spring can be heard in the music of the birds, and everywhere signs of life reappear. Daffodils are blooming and trees, that just a short while ago looked like broken umbrellas, start to display their showy blossoms. In the vineyard we wait for bud break, when the brand new leaves begin to emerge and unfurl themselves from their winter sleep. While mother nature is painting her canvas, however, we worry a bit…If budbreak occurs too early, the young shoots may be vulnerable to frost damage during spring. If budbreak occurs too late, the grapes may not have enough time to fully ripen. We can only wait and see…and keep our fingers crossed.

Shooting a Video in the Vineyard with James
March 26th, 2012
Last Friday found us out in the vineyard with Jim and the SIMZ Productions film crew. That is the same crew that shoots for Cellar Angels and did the beautiful video of Jim last November. This time, Jim talked about the vineyard in spring and the work that goes into getting ready for the new growing season. He also talked about enjoying Fog Crest Vineyard wines with food during the summer months. We’ll make sure to get some wine and food pairings with recipes posted for you a little later.

The crew then went into the barrel room to film our winemaker, Daniel Moore, proudly talking about our upcoming 2010 Pinot Noir releases.

And to celebrate the productive day, the crew was treated to an amazing wine country lunch paired with a preview tasting of our 2010 Estate Pinot Noir.
Grilled quail
Ravioli with hunter sauce
Spring greens with roasted golden beets, blood oranges and french feta
Strawberries
Should have the completed video for you to enjoy in about a week so stay tuned! Cheers!
